About these resources

As part of the Youth Type 2 Diabetes Codesign project, our team have been working with young people, families, community, and health professionals to develop a suite of resources that support young people to live well with Type 2 diabetes.

Young people often tell us that they want to hear about the experiences of other youth in managing Type 2 diabetes. To reduce the negative perceptions of a diabetes diagnosis and reduce the stigma and shame associated with living with this condition, we have developed a series of videos of young people and community members living with type 2 diabetes sharing their lived experience. There are also videos from Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners sharing their experiences and advice for supporting young people with Type 2 diabetes.

Many participants highlighted the need to develop youth-friendly and culturally appropriate resources to improve understandings of Type 2 diabetes, how it affects the body, and the different treatment options. Our Far- North Queensland team worked with young people to codesign short animations to support youth newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

This was echoed by Top End Health Professionals, who identified the need to be able to utilise practical tools for engaging and sharing health information with young people. The Youth team with the help of Health Professionals attending our Working Groups, developed a suite of educational videos covering topics such as medication commonly used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, checking blood sugar levels, and what will happen if you get diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

There are 16 lived experience videos, 5 animations and 10 educational videos.

Any feedback about the videos is welcome via: youth.diabetes@menzies.edu.au
